John Esten Cook was JEB Stuart's cousin and served on his staff. He had intimate acquaintances with Lee and Jackson, but primarily worshipped the ground his cousin rode over! Stuart eventually put him in charge of writing his after action reports because of Cooke's talent. During the war he wrote frequently of camp life and battles and was known in the Richmond papers as "Our Virginia Corresponent." After the war he published many of his journals through short essays, and wrote biographies on Jackson and R.E. Lee. Although John Esten Cooke is an overly romantic writer, it does take the reader back to the period after the end of the Sectional War where Cooke's passion is contagious. In my estimation of reading this novel, he is trying to make sense of all of the things he saw, heard, and felt during the War and seeking to come to terms with it all, as many a Confederate man and woman did in 1865. This little treasure of a book (I was able to find one published in 1898) is a series of romantic synopses of all the major battles of the Army of Northern Virginia, from First Manassas through Sharpsburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and the ultimate surrender of Lee's army. Written and first published in 1870, Cooke is primarily writing for the Southern combatant in recalling the glory days of 1861-1863, when the death of Stonewall Jackson lost the war for the South. He is reminiscing. He is missing his friends who died on the battlefield. His writing is sincere and emotional; and even if it hints slightly of bitterness, there is no mean-spiritedness in his purpose or his words. My heart breaks when I read any of Cooke's writing because he is wholly converted to his principles and to the men he champions: JEB Stuart, Stonewall Jackson, and Robert E. Lee.Product details

John Esten Cooke's little volume (mine is dated 1870) relates first-hand accounts of what is absolutely stupidly and wrongly termed the civil war; so-called since damnyankees won and think they have the right to lie about the Second American War for Independence. Yes, to the few of us who are Southerners and not brainwashed, it is one word. I call it Mr. Lincoln's War since the vile tyrant started it when he could have avoided it. Cooke was a gifted writer who fought from the victory at First Manassas to the heartbreaking end at Appomattox which he witnessed. Each chapter describes briefly but chiefly events of each major battle in Virginia. Revisionist "historians", "Johnny-come-latelys" can only attempt to deny and rewrite what their betters have previously written.
Why was it not the civil war? The South was a sovereign nation, The Confederate States of America, and had no designs on the United States Federal Government. A civil war is fought by two sides for central control. So stop being stupid.
